Poison Milk and Alternative SweetenersPoison MilkWe don't generally jump on these email forwards that end up in our inbox regarding contamination scares. But we got this one twice in one day, and thought that we should pass it along. Apparently, in China there are some suppliers of powdered milk that have been putting a chemical called Melamine in their powdered milk products. The Melamine is odorless and tasteless and simulates protein, so it's a cheap way to increase the protein count in the powdered milk and avoid the expense of using real milk. This chemical is used to make industrial plastics. It is not intended for human consumption. In China, this contamination has caused kidney failure in thousands of babies who were being fed with powdered milk formula. Most of you probably don't have any powdered milk from China around your house, but you may have Coffee Mate non-dairy creamers and Nestle chocolate bars. (Two products that showed up on the watch-list that we received.) And we have also heard that Starbucks coffee products may have been contaminated. There are actually several products that may be contaminated with this chemical. For more information on possible contaminated products, you can go check out the FDA website at http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/melamine.html We aren't trying to be fear mongers or anything, we just thought that you might want to be extra careful about where your foil wrapped Chocolate-Santas are coming from this year. For additional information you can also visit this blog There is a more comprehensive list of contaminated products there. Alternative Sweeteners As for alternative sweeteners, Beth found a good article on sugar alternatives at Mother Earth News. If you are looking to decrease the amount of refined sugar that you use, you may want to try these:
For descriptions of each, you can see the full article at http://www.motherearthnews.com/Natural-Health/2006-11-01/7-Sweet-Sugar-Substitutes.aspx This week's recipe: Home Made SalsaThis is one of our family's favorites. It's very easy to make, and very tasty. (Better than most of the store bought salsas that you will find.)
Just chop everything up and put it in a bowl. We don't really measure anything, we just do it to taste. You can add green onions or hot peppers depending on what you like. You can even make your own chips. Just cut up some flour or corn tortillas into triangles, brush them with olive oil, sprinkle them with a tiny bit of home made Taco Seasoning , and bake them until they're crispy.
